Tom and Jerry is an American animated media franchise and series of comedy short films created in 1940 by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. Their debut appearance, “Puss Gets the Boot”, features a cat named Jasper and an unnamed mouse, named Jinx in pre-production, and an African American housemaid named Mammy Two Shoes. However, by his next appearance in “The Midnight Snack”, he was known as "Tom" or "Thomas".
