Waikiki is a resort district in southeastern Honolulu (city), Hawaii, U.S. On the southern coast of Oahu island, Waikiki (Hawaiian: “Spurting Water”) is situated on Mamala Bay between the Ala Wai Canal (north and west) and the Diamond Head crater (southeast). Waikiki’s beach, now a tourist mecca, is one of the best-known in the world; its white sand, however, is mostly imported, because erosion constantly depletes the beachfront. Lined with luxury hotels, Waikiki Beach is the focus of water-sports facilities and has an aquarium, zoo, garden attractions, and the International Market Place for Pacific Basin crafts. Waikiki is also the site of Fort DeRussy, a former fort and now a park that honors members of the U.S. armed forces.
