Dachshunds were originally bred in the 15th century to hunt badgers, which is where their name comes from. The word “dachshund” literally means “badger dog” in German. Their long, narrow bodies allowed them to easily fit into badger dens and their short legs helped them move around in tight spaces. Over time, Dachshunds were also used to hunt other small prey such as rabbits, foxes, and even wild boar. Their hunting abilities made them a popular breed among hunters in Germany and other parts of Europe.
