A five-and-dime store, also known as a dime store or ten-cent store, was a type of retail establishment that primarily sold inexpensive merchandise. The name originated from the fact that all items were historically priced at either five or ten cents. These retail stores offered a wide variety of goods, often described as a "rambling, comfortable hodgepodge of unrelated items and scents". Many five-and-dime stores have since disappeared due to competition from larger retailers and an inability to adapt to changing consumer tastes. The term "five-and-dime" was first used in 1916.1
